Does putting sand bags in my trunk help in the snow with front wheel drive?
I have a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. It's front wheel drive, and I have a tendency of sliding around like crazy during the winter. Going with the advice of my father, we put 240 pounds worth of sand bags in the trunk. However, recently I heard that since it IS front wheel drive, these sand bags don't help at all and actually make my traction worse. Is this true?
Plus, is there anything I can do to improve my traction in the snow? I do have snow tires.
I have lived all over the state of Wisconsin for nearly 50 years. I also drive a cobalt 60 miles a day just to get to work and back. I must say there are better cars for winter driving. I believe it's the track width of this car that creates the problem. It's narrower than most which makes it difficult to follow the beatin path. The sand in the trunk will only make the car harder to stop.(Inertia) Spend your money on Blizzak snow tires. They have a very soft rubber compound that bites the snow and ice better than any other I've tried. In addition, if you find yourself sliding say up to a stop sign put the trans in neutral. This uncouples the engine from the trans and removes the tendency of tranny trying to pull the car forward. Don't downshift in an effort to slow the car. Todays trannys are smart enough to not let the tranny downshift until the vehicle speed and rpm are within a given parameter. By then it may be to late. But the best tip is to just slow down You might not get where you are going as fast, but you will at least get there.
