Urban Trek

What is a reliable bicycle for a Big Rider?

So, lately I've been looking at bikes and I haven't had one since I was 13, I'm now 19 and a little big around the waist if you know what I mean...
I'm looking for a good reliable bike that can hold around 290-310lbs.
Something I can ride too and from work and to run errands, in hope that with a changed diet it can help me drop a few pounds.
I'm only looking to spend about $200-500 because that's basically all I have right now.
So do you guys know of any specific bikes that would be great for me?
I know of Trek but i dont know which bike from that company would be good for me or which type I want. Doess riding around the NYC mean go for an urban bike? but if I go Urban bike aren't those light or not good for losing weight? I have no clue!
So Please guys help! I would greatly appreciate your opinion.

Bike that can hold 290-310lbs.
Reliable, good. Price range : $200-$500. thank u

Same problem here & I cured it! I'm glad you understand that you need a bike that will hold the weight. Two things to consider... #1) A cassette rear hub vs. a cheaper freewheel. The freewheel hub (gears) simply screw on. A cassette has splines that slide into the hub & held in place with a locking ring. (See 1st link below.) #2) Double walled rims. This combination will give you the strongest set up.

I started at 310 & now down to about 245. I have NO car. I've added a rear rack & fold out grocery baskets. So, everything I do is by bike. Imagine a 310 lb. man & 2 full sacks of groceries on a bike. Cheap discount store bikes would crumple under that pressure.

I own a 2008 Raleigh Hybrid. Similar bikes today are about $450. Yes, that's higher than anything from Wally World. But, you're getting a bike that will last a lifetime, taken care of properly. See 2nd & 3rd links from Raleigh. It doesn't HAVE to be a Raleigh...but look for both the cassette hub & double walled rims.
