Sealed Bearing vs Loose Bearing Hub?
What's the difference between the two and what more would I have to do with a loose bearing track wheelset? I know a sealed bearing requires little to no maintenance but how much more of a hassle is loose bearing? I live in California so I don't think rain will be much of a problem. Thanks!

This is a subject comes up often and has been talked about forever. First off which is better is a matter of opinion and which you prefer to have or run. As far as maintenance goes the loose bearings naturally are more hassle and should be torn down more frequently for service because they can collect dirt and moisture easier than a sealed bearing . Another issue with loose bearings is that a ruined cup in a cup-and-cone hub, for example, may require that the whole hub be scrapped. As far as the differences between the two, IMO the sealed bearings are the way to go, they have a lot less rolling resistance than the old style bearings, there's no maintenance involved, if they go bad they're fairly cheap and easily replaced. In the long run I think if you stop and figure the cost of the wrenches and grease and possibly the parts (bearings etc) and time of servicing the loose bearings say nothing about the mess you end up with, Sealed bearings actually cheaper to have and use.
