removing a seized bottom bracket?
I have a saracen mantra, its about 5 years old and i cant get the bottom bracket to budge. I decided to replace them with some shimano slx cranks, however, the current octalink style bottom bracket wont move.
anyone got any ideas?
Bottom brackets use a bottom bracket tool. Don't try to improvise, as McGyver-ing your BB may result in damaged threads or mis-aligned cups.
BB tools are cheap, but they come in different styles for different manufacturers.
Remove the cranks and thoroughly clean the area around the BB. Cleanliness is extremely important when working in this area. Degrease as well. Put the bike on a solid surface (such as the ground) and place the BB tool on the drive-side BB cup, parallel to the ground, about 2" above or below the chainstays, depending on your threading (there will usually be arrows showing the direction you DON'T want to turn, but right sides are usually reverse-threaded so you'll put the tool below the chainstay). Standing next to the rear dérailleur, grab the handle of the BB tool and the chainstay with your right hand and squeeze to loosen the cup. It should creak loose. Once the seal has been broken, it should be pretty easy to remove.
On the other side, the BB tool will once again start 2" below the chainstay.
Once everything is off, clean and degrease inside the BB shell. Then go to a good shop and pay to have the BB shell refaced and re-tapped (if necessary). Manufacturers tend to get sloppy in the BB area and leave paint drips on the BB where the cups meet the frame. Refacing will ensure the shell surfaces are parallel. Your BB shouldn't need to be re-tapped, but you never know. The refacing tool and BB tap are pretty expensive, but most shops will do the work cheap. Mine does it for about $5.
Even though I'm a SRAM guy, I'm a big fan of RaceFace cranks and BBs. They are strong, light, and easy to maintain. There are better systems out there, but for the price and reliability, you can't beat them.
Good luck, and if in doubt, pay a shop to work on it. Ruining your BB is ruining your bike. And, perhaps, knees.
