Best road bike tires for the buck?
I just purchased a slightly used Fuji road bike. The tires got some bald spots here and there and performs just fine, but Im looking for a new set of tires (700x25) that would last and durable enough to support a 240 pound man without any flats or punctures. My budget is no more than 50 dollars a pair.
I also would like to know if I should true the wheel myself instead of paying 25 each at a local bike shop. And is it okay to clean the chain and cassette with WD40?
As far as tires with a budget of $50 you probably are not going to get anything fantastic, I can tell you that I am right at 200lbs and I have had real good luck with the Bontrager Select K 700 x 23c and I paid $20 each and that was what the bike shop suggested.
Everyone will have his own system for cleaning parts, drive train etc, and everyone will say his works the best.You can go to an auto supply store and ask for a parts cleaning solution which will work well and is on the expensive side or to the gas station and use gas which will work equally as well. Something to keep in mind is any solvents like (parts cleaning solution, alcohol, Gas etc. ) must be thoroughly cleaned off parts that are to be re-lubricated. Residual solvent will have a solvent effect on the replacement lubricant.
The technique that I use and prefer and cleans just as well and is cheaper is using diesel fuel. Diesel fuel is what race mechanics use to clean greasy parts because it contains a bit of lubricant, which ensures the parts are cleaned and never completely stripped of lube. You can also use it to clean your cassette, derailleur etc. Half a quart at the station cost near nothing. As far as the WD-40 I'd stay away from it, although it does have some cleaning ability's it's not intended for use on bicycle parts and is not a good lubricant.
You can also true your wheels if you wish, I've done mine for years. keep in mind that truing a wheel is a little harder than one can expect and taking it to a shop is relatively inexpensive. If you're dead set on truing your own wheels and have never done so I'd find an old wheel to practice on first, that would give you an idea of what to do and at the same time let you know if it's something you want too do. You can use your brake pads for reference points if you have a bike stand but a truing stand would be better.
