Should i attempt to rebuild my bike?
I havea Honda Roadmaster CD200 parallel twin 200 cc motorcycle. i know it needs a rebuild cause oil leaks out from the gaskets, the bike burns a lot of engine oil aswell, and recently, i cant keep it running cause the engine stays running only if i keep revving it, if i leave the handlebars, it dies out, and the plugs also get soaked in oil. so i think the piston rings or maybe the pistons need to be changed. I have done small works on the bike such as opening the front forks and changing the fluids and laced wheels and stuff, but i never touched the engine. So i need to know if itll be a good idea to work on it myself, or should i go to a professional mechanic to get the job done. I have never worked on the motor ever. I can be very careful but is it a good idea to disassemble the motor myself? i also need to know if i need any special tools for the the job. help me out mechanics:) thanks
Its a 1981 Honda CD200 Roadmaster. similiar to the CM200 Benly sold in the uk and usa.
First, get a good manual, if you don't have one. Read, and read again, the section on top end rebuilding. It will tell you what tools you need and what is required. Be sure to have the rebuild gasket sets, rings and other replacement items on hand when you start, it will make the job easier and faster.
Make sure the oil leak(s) is not a cracked case before you get started. If it is, the cost will be prohibitive to fix....you could buy a used or rebuilt engine cheaper. Check eBay.
You sound like an intelligent and mechanically inclined person, you should be able to handle this without any problems. I have rebuilt a number of Honda engines, they are pretty simple. Good luck, I'm sure you can do it!!
