Force Light
In theory could there be a force faster than the speed of light?
Just a little bit of background information.
I'm a 15 year old student in TN so no really knowledge in the field of physics.
In theory i believe there could be a force faster than the speed of light.
Think about it we would have no way of really knowing seeing as it's faster than the eye.
If so in theory how could we prove this and somehow use it for space travel?
Did I just make a complete fool of myself or is this making sense to at least some of you.
Forces don't have speeds -- except in the quantum picture, in which every force has an associated particle that communicates that force. These are constrained to obey special relativity ("SR"), and to travel no faster than 'light.' (Actually, the term, "speed of light" is something of a misnomer, because it is a property not of light, but of spacetime. Any massless field will travel at this speed. It should probably be called the "characteristic spacetime speed," which has the advantage of starting with "c," but the misfortune of being too big a mouthful.)
Actually, it was Einstein's realization, once he had worked out SR, that when a configuration of mass changed, the effect of that change couldn't propagate out any faster than c, so he had to tackle Newtonian gravity to make it consistent with SR. It took him 10 years, but he finally worked out general relativity, in which spacetime itself has curvature, which appears to us to be a 'force of gravity' -- "matter tells spacetime how to curve; spacetime tells matter how to move;" and the details are in the Einstein field equation, G = 8πT. (In fact, Newton himself was troubled by the instantaneous effect-at-a-distance in his theory of gravity, but the theory worked on everything he was able to apply it to, so he went no further.)
The problem with having anything (that can have effects on other things) traveling faster than c, is that in some frames of reference, the effect will happen before the cause. This is an inescapable result of SR.
No, of course you're not a fool -- you're asking questions that most kids your age can't even comprehend, and there's no learning without questions. And if you keep asking questions, some of them will be foolish, but you recognize that, and you move on. Even that kind of experience teaches. This whole area is still under construction (the quest in physics for a "Theory Of Everything"), and I'm confident that it will remain so until you're at a point to be able to contribute something to it, if you should so choose.
