Double Toe
Double Sal and Toe help?
I cannot land my double sal-chow or toe-loop clean. Any tips? Its really just that i can't get 2 full rotations and i have an issue woth pre-turning (turning before leaving the ice). Please help. Thorough answers much appreciated.
Since I can't see what you are doing right now, I can't give really pin-pointed help, but I can tell you some basic things that I find myself repeating to nearly every student at some point. Hopefully these things will help.
First off, on both jumps, make sure that you are really checking your three turn before trying to jump. Start exaggerating the check. Hold it for a really long time. Turn and then hold, hold, hold, until you practically forget that you even did a three turn to begin with.
One of the common mistakes in jumps is to use the rotation of the three turn to start your jump. That's a big no-no. The turn is one step. The jump is completely separate.
Now, on your double sal, pay attention to where your feet are. That free leg has a very set pattern that will get you from the idea of a double sal to the actual jump. After the check with your free leg at six o'clock, put your free leg to three o'clock in front of you. As you jump up into the air, kick it over to nine o'clock. Practice that movement a few times off-ice. Practice it on-ice without jumping. Then try it in the jump.
For the double toe loop, the one piece of advice I find myself giving again and again and again on that jump is Don't Reach Behind Your Skating Leg! The toe of the free leg should come down on its own side of the skating leg. Your right foot comes down on the right side of your skating (left) leg. If you jump goofy-footed, then your left foot comes down on the left side of your skating (right) leg.
In other words, at the moment before you jump, your legs should NOT be crossed behind you.
Up in the air, the double toe loop is a lot like an axel. You jump into the air in a fairly open position, concerning yourself with height, not rotation. Then, in the air you switch your balance into a back spin position, and pull your hands from out in front of you to the center of your chest. The rotation comes from that movement, not from anything you did on the ground before jumping.
When people realize that the double toe and the axel are practically the same, they start to get worried about doing "toe axels". A so-called "toe-axel" is when you pre-rotate the double toe loop and actually take off facing forward, so that you only rotate one and a half times instead of two. Avoid this by making sure that 1) you have a strong check before the jump, 2) to you don't rotate at all until you are in the air.
Use your toe to get your height. Tap and step into the air. Think up! Only start the rotation part once you are in the air. It sounds scary if you haven't done it, but imagine it in your head. Feel yourself do that: jump into the air with no rotation, and then start to turn once you hit the apex of your jump, and then land cleanly. Imagining the jump over and over just like that will help you have the courage to stick it out and not pre-rotate the jump when you actually do it.
