Cylcing Saddle

Road Cylcing: Climbing against a headwind?

Hi,
I'm fairly new to road cycling but what I have been taught is that when going against a headwind try to get lower and more aerodynamic on the bike and I have also been told that when climbing a hill thats fairly steep to sit back more in my saddle and be more upright.

So my question is if I am climbing a hill against a headwind what position should I take? Down on the drops, sit back or just ride normally on the hoods?

Depends how steep the hill is. On a really steep hill, you won't be moving fast, so sitting up won't slow you down. On a gradual climb, using the drops to cut wind resistance might be better. With drop bars you have 3 basic positions, the tops of the bars are used for sitting up and relaxing. The hoods offer a more aerodynamic, yet still fairly relaxed position which will probably be used most often. The drops are used for going fast and cheating the wind. You will probably change positions when climbing from time to time as the grade and effort level changes. On long climbs, even with a headwind, the most relaxed position is often best.
