What are some good things to eat before and after cycling?
I never know what to eat and I hate getting tired in the middle of my ride.
Pre-ride -- stick with things that won't upset your stomach and are easy to digest. I personally favor yogurt, though your tastes may vary. Oatmeal or toast are other favorites. My previous cycling coach used to tell us that unless you are racing for over an hour, you can get by eating anything (like ham and eggs).
During the ride -- depends on how long your ride is. For one hour or less, plain water is fine. For longer, a combination of energy drinks, gel, or an energy bar other easily digestible foods (bananas and fig newtons are old standbys) should be considered (though solid food is really only useful if you're riding >2hours).
Post-ride -- the trick is to replenish your glycogen reserves as quickly as possible after your ride, when your body is most receptive to it. Typically you've got about an hour after your ride in which your body is very receptive to replenishing its glycogen reserves. After that, your body isn't nearly as efficient in doing so and that will lengthen recovery process.
While most sources would recommend some sort of protein-based recovery drink, just about any carbo-protein food (though make sure it's relatively easy to digest) will do. More recently, a study was published indicating that chocolate milk/milkshakes were equally effective as a recovery drink than a widely known recovery drink. I've tried it myself and it seems to do ok for me, but your results may vary.
