Bike pedal hits front wheel when turning?

I put my son's new 24" mountain bike together and while riding it, he just about flew over the handles because his front wheel hits his actual pedals when he is in a slow turn and needs to pedal. Any answers on how to fix this?

If the pedal( not your son's foot ) hits the wheel, there is something wrong with the bike. Make sure that the fork is facing in the right direction, if there is a front brake, it should be facing forward. If there is no brake, try turning the fork 180 degrees to see if the wheel is then farther forward. If it is only your son's foot that hits the wheel, check to see if he is placing his foot properly on the pedal. The right way to pedal is with the ball of the foot over the pedal spindle. If you pedal with the pedal spindle back under the instep, your foot will stick much too far forward and possibly touch the wheel at low speeds.
