Need help with installing an operating system on my laptop?
I'm trying to install XP on my Sony Vaio.
This is the message I get when I insert any disc like 98, NT, 95:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix this problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings and then click "next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system admin or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Does anyone know what this means?
But when I insert an XP disc, the laptop starts and displays "Windows Setup" on a blue screen. At the bottom it says "loading files" or something. Then another message will come up saying a problem had been detected.
What do I do now? Do I need to take my computer in to get fixed?

That's an error with Vista's boot Boot Confg Data (BCD). You'll need the Vista DVD...
Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
Press a key when you are prompted.
Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
Click Repair your computer.
Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.
